Marketplace Open Enrollment Ended

Marketplace Open Enrollment Ended – Now What Are My Options?

Yes, Marketplace Open Enrollment ended on January 15, 2023. The next Open Enrollment period will not happen again until November 1, 2023. So, now what are my options if I need health insurance? That’s a great question.

Marketplace Plans

Regarding a Marketplace plan, you will need a “Qualifying Life Event” to enroll outside the Open Enrollment period. It’s called a “Special Enrollment Period.” Below are some of the basic types of qualifying life events.

  •  Losing your existing health coverage
  • Losing your eligibility for Medicaid or CHIP
  • Turing 26 and losing coverage through a parent’s plan
  • Getting married or divorced
  • Having a baby or adopting a child
  • Death in the family
  • Moving to a different zip code
  • Changes in your income that affect the coverage you qualify for
  • Becoming a U.S. citizen

 Self-Funded Plans

In addition, you also have access to non-marketplace plans “anytime” during the year without having a qualifying life event. These would be what the industry refers to as “Self-Funded” plans. Self-Funded plans have become very popular over the years. These types of plans are a viable alternative to traditional Marketplace plans. They can offer greater flexibility, control, and cost-saving opportunities.
